Southwark Council’s Ageing Well Hub

The Ageing Well Hub is a collection of Southwark-based organisations that support all adults over 60 years of age living in Southwark. The hub can signpost you to many areas of support. They can let you know what local service and social activities are available to you. Some examples of support include:

  • Benefits and financial issues
  • access to computers /the internet and computer classes.
  • Exercise and light-balancing exercises
  • Finding opportunities to socialise and meet other people
  • Understand your options around meal deliveries and help with household cleaning

Link Age Southwark

Those over 60+ can self-refer to Link Age Southwark. Examples of what they can help with:

  • Getting on the internet. IT support with tablets and mobile phones.
  • Filling in forms
  • Benefit checks
  • Signposting to toenail cutting services (fee payable)
  • Finding social groups or a befriender
  • Finding local community lunches
  • Researching activities and exercise groups
  • Support for those living with dementia and their carers
  • Finding local services and access to Age UKs Handyperson services
  • Applying for a Blue Badge (and looking at eligibility requirements)

Southwark Pensioners Centre

Southwark Pensioners Service offers a range of services including:

  • 50+ advice around a range of problems. They offer help with welfare benefits, debt, housing, energy costs, consumer issues, transport and energy costs.
  • Activities and social opportunities.
  • Health and Wellbeing – through activities, day trips, gentle exercise activities and health promotion events.
  • Getting and staying online.

London Senior Social

London Senior Social is a community-based group that works with older people (aged 60 and over) who would like to remain active, keep socially engaged, discover new skills and make new friends. They offer:

  • Day trips
  • Social events
  • Door to door transportation to and from all events
  • Hot meals

Citizen’s Advice Bureau

Citizen’s Advice Provides free and independent advice on a range of issues. General advice issues include:

  • Money, debt and benefits – including pension issues.
  • Work related concerns (E.g. your rights)
  • Housing (repairs, housing options)
  • Certain legal issues
  • Immigration issues

The Silver Line Helpline

The Silver Line Helpline run by Age UK is a free, confidential telephone service for older people. They provide friendship, conversation and support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Samaritans

If you are feeling low in mood, struggling with your mental wellbeing, you can call and chat to a trained volunteer. They will listen to you.

CRUSE (bereavement support)

Whether it is a recent loss or a death from a while ago, you might need someone to talk to about it. CRUSE has a free helpline. They can also refer you to your local bereavement support centre located in Lambeth.

Blue Cross Pet Bereavement

Losing a pet – whether due to death or separation – is often sad, difficult and traumatic. It affects people in different ways. If you are grieving a pet, or facing a loss, Blue Cross have a free and confidential service to support you.

Alzheimer’s UK

Dementia support workers at Alzheimer’s UK offer information and practical guidance to help you understand dementia, cope with day-to-day challenges and prepare for the future. They offer information to people who are worried about their memory and ongoing support to people affected by dementia – face to face, over the phone or in writing. Support is also available for friends and family.

Southwark Carers

Southwark carers work to support unpaid carers in their caring roles to improve your quality of life. They can support those living or working within the Southwark area. Southwark Carers accept self-referrals, or a referral from a family member, friend or professional. They prefer to be contacted via email or phone. Southwark carer offers the following services:

  • Information and advice – provision & support
  • Signposting & referral – referrals & advocacy
  • Carers assessment – support in accessing the assessment, understanding the process and your rights as a carer
  • Carers activity/support groups – specialist: arts, crafts, films etc
  • Emotional support – time & space to be heard, counselling
  • End of life care – guidance & support and/or support completing Power of Attorney
  • Access to grants – essential household items, IT & holidays
  • Outreach & community engagement – identifying hidden carers
  • Contingency/Emergency planning – preparing for emergencies
  • Emergency food support – through their foodbank partnership

Peckham Library

Use the library to access a computer with internet and a printer. Staff are around to help you use the computer if you need some help. You can also borrow books and music.

Warm Spaces

During the cost of living crisis, it has got more expensive to heat your home. If you need somewhere safe and warm during the day, there are lots of places you can visit. Southwark Council has a list of these.

Southwark Council’s Switchboard

Connect to any council department e.g. housing, housing repairs, council and social services. For housing repairs (for council house tenants where repairs is part of your tenancy agreement) you can call 0200 20 7525 2600 or email repairs@southwark.org.uk.

MySouthwark Service Point

They offer:

  • 30 to 1-hour appointments – for complex enquires about your council tax and housing benefit.
  • 15-minute fast track service appointments – for document submission and general enquiries regarding Council tax, housing benefit and blue badge applications.
